FEBRUARY

After being chosen as the IB coordinators, Wendy Vu and I went for IB training in Salt Lake City.  Neither of us was thrilled with the location, but we made the best of it for the four days.

Randi Adleberg and I attended training at the United World College in Montezuma, New Mexico, and took the opportunity to see some sites as well.  I think this was my second visit to the United World College.

Later that month Wendy and I went to the IB Americas conference in Monterey.  Our assistant principal, Peggy Kelly, joined us there as well.  Wendy and I played hooky one day and went whale watching and to the Aquarium!

AUGUST

Rachel had a summer internship in China, and things went south from the start.  After a few weeks of working with David Schmidt's son, Eric, on a fund-raising project for a bicycle trip, she finally was able to teach English for a couple of weeks before that program also ended early!  David and I joined Rachel and his daughter, Leslie, for 2 weeks in China.

OCTOBER

I had applied for a summer program with the Fulbright Memorial Fellowship, but since I was considered an "administrator" I was only eligible for the program in the fall.  I was lucky that my principal, Dan Meier, allowed me to go.  We were in Japan for three weeks: the first week was an introduction to the country in Tokyo.  The following week we were divided into groups of 20 and sent to different smaller cities and towns; I was with the Matto group.  We would later learn that Matto would be no more, being made a part of Kanazawa.  Finally, we returned to Tokyo to share what we learned about the educational system in Japan.
